It can have internal or external teeth for gripping and can be split through one part of the ring. A lock washer is designed to prevent a secured joint that is fastened with a bolt or screw from turning or loosening in response to shock or vibration. They work to lock a part in place and are most often used in applications where there are drastic heat conditions or heavy vibrations.

Bend the tab of these lock washers against the flats of a hex nut or bolt head to prevent the fastener and washer from turning and loosening.
